Day of Action!
May 15, at the State Capitol
Thousands of students, parents, community advocates and supporters will converge in Sacramento on Thursday, May 15th to demand the Governor keep his promise to make 2008 the "Year of Education." We will call on him to fully fund education!
May 17th, 2008 marks the 54th anniversary of the Supreme Court's Brown vs. Board of Education decision ending "separate and unequal" education. Fifty-four years later, youth of color, immigrant youth and poor communities face unequal schools, high disappearance/drop-out rates, poor school conditions and obstacles to higher education! The Governor’s proposed $5 billion cuts to the education budget will have a devastating impact on our already under-funded schools.
Join the Campaign for Quality Education (CQE) for a statewide student action in Sacramento to demand that the Governor ensure that all California schools are fully funded. For more information about May 15, see the Day of Action information page .

April 7, 2008 A Change to Make Change CFJ announces transition of Executive Director Solomon Rivera In 1995, Californians for Justice was founded with the goal of building the power of the “emerging majority” of people of color, poor people, and youth. For the last seven years, CFJ has fought to ensure every student a quality education and an equal opportunity to succeed. But right now, something big is happening in California and the nation. The threat of cuts to funding for California’s schools and other services, together with excitement about the presidential race, is creating a groundswell of grassroots activity. At the same time, with progressive legislators Karen Bass and Darrel Steinberg taking over the top positions in the state Assembly and Senate respectively, we have an unprecedented opportunity to win concrete, systemic change in California. CFJ is poised to take advantage of this confluence of events. Assemblymember Bass has an strong impressive history of grassroots organizing and is a strong CFJ supporter. As she moves into the role of Speaker, we are excited to work with her to move our agenda for education reform. We also know that Assemblymember Bass has a landmark opportunity to change power in Sacramento. In order to do this she needs trusted and experienced staff members to lead this work. For that reason, Solomon Rivera has decided to step down as CFJ’s Executive Director and join Bass’ staff. This is a great opportunity for Solomon, for CFJ and for our progressive movement. Solomon will be working to build a progressive majority in the legislature that can advance policies that reflect CFJ’s vision for a more equitable education system. For more information on the exciting plans for CFJ's education campaign and Solomon's transition, please see the full statement released by CFJ. |
